What You Can Do Outside of Work to Build Your Resume

How many times are you going to list “employee of the month” on your resume? It’s a competitive job market out there, and being a loyal employee who sits at their cubicle from 9–5 Monday through Friday, doesn’t quite stand out anymore. Spend a few evenings or days during the week outside of work not watching Netflix—it’ll pay off, and Stranger Things isn’t going anywhere.

Join an interest group.

For example, if you’ve been wanting to use and build on the two years of French you learned in high school, there is most likely a group in your area who you can practice with, and learning a new language is an awesome skill that can lead to new opportunities in or outside the office.

Apply to be a board member.

Being a board member is an effective way to display your responsibility, leadership, and commitment to an organization or cause. If you’ve been wanting to make a difference, enter a new industry you’re interested in, or simply network, being on the board of an organization puts you at the forefront of new opportunities. As a board member of Art League Houston, I’ve had the chance to meet other outstanding creativepreneurs and artists in and outside of Houston, which has been enriching in itself. It also provides a great platform for exposure for my personal brand and business.

Volunteer—pet a puppy.

Even if it’s just a few hours each month, volunteering is a great way to build your resume and restore a little faith in humanity each time a manager reviews it. Many of us professionals are so caught up in business and “coming up” that volunteering hardly ever crosses our minds. If you’re in a stable place at work and find yourself bored at home during the week, consider volunteering in your community.

These are just a few the ways I’ve stood out as a professional and entrepreneur. Trust me—leaders and business owners remember those who go the extra mile. Get yourself out there! You never know who you’re going to meet or impress, and most importantly, enjoy yourself at the same time.
